I once had a dog like you before and I can really testify how energetic you folks are. I had lost a pair of shoes and a slippers once. After that, I decided to buy a lot of chew toys for her. Demanding yet fun to be with. That is what I can say to those who wanted a Plott Hounds as a pet.

Yep. These are some chewy pups. It's a bit time-consuming to teach, but Dr. Ian Dunbar has some great advice about how to get your pup hooked on chew toys. Can't remember the name of his puppy book, but it's out there somewhere. You definitely need the industrial-strength Kongs for these guys!

No, the bear they got was a lot smaller than that one. Mr. Bart Campbell got that one years ago over in Maggie Valley.

Thank you Rick for the nice compliment. David and I have spent a lot of time talking to various groups about good hunting practices equals good conservation and game management.

He is Waylon (my Dad) and he's a full-blood, registered Plott hound. He's really good with people plus he's a good hunting dog too.

You are sooo right. these dogs (whilst it doesn't really look like it) have a lot of strength, especially when they are in 'hunting' mode. I would probably be cautious about having my children playing around them unless they have been properly trained and socialized. He does look to be very healthy and you can see that his coat is shiny which is also a good sign of a healthy dog.

What type of dog breed is it? because it looks like its a mix between a lab and a rodesian ridgeback

Thank you Kim and thank you for coming to Sylva. I really like Sylva and one of my most favorite things is to go to the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings with David. I get to play with a lot of other dogs and get a lot of pets. I like people that really love their dogs! There are so many out there that aren't as lucky as me and your dogs. I hope you'll come back to Sylva again sometime.

Great story! We have a Great Dane and a Rottweiler and love our dogs to death. I had not read any info on Plott Hounds before so this was good information to learn. We were just in Sylva a few weeks ago for the Little League All-Stars baseball state championships. It is a wonderful town!

Anna, thank you for posting on the blog and it sounds like you're a very lucky Plott hound to have such good parents. As far as getting along with another dog, Plott hounds have been bred to be cooperative with other dogs and not fight. I love playing with all kinds of dogs and I'll bet that you do too and I'm sure that you and your new Plott brother will do fine. Just make sure that he has enough chew toys! Keep us posted.

Hi Nannie, I'm a 4-year old plott hound who's been with my forever family for 2 years. I just have two parents, but they are awesome and take me for long walks twice a day and give me lots of love and attention :) I have a ton of doggie friends in the neighborhood- the newest is a 10-week old plott/lab puppy- I pretend he is my own puppy (I had pups before I was adopted by my family) :) Last night I heard them talking about getting me a brother! I guess there is a 6-month old (male) plott at our local shelter that I am going to meet today! Do you have any suggestions for me or my parents as to how him and I can get along the best? Thanks!
