I guess before we do much more touring I wanted to talk to you about having a Plott hound for a pet. I live with Jeannette, David, Ernie and the chickens on five acres of land a mile away from the highway. People see me with David and they think they would like to have a Plott hound for a pet. While we can make a good pet you have to be able to handle a really high-energy dog and be able to give us a lot of exercise. Even though I get a lot of exercise, there are times when I’ve gotten bored as a puppy when I chewed a hole in the laundry room wallboard, I chewed the wallpaper off a large piece of wall, I’ve chewed a hole in the porch screen three times and I used to bay our neighbor’s cat but we’ve actually become pretty good friends now. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I ate Jeannette’s dental guard too. I couldn’t help myself, it tasted and smelled so-o-o good! The reason I’m telling you these things is that I would hate for you to get a dog like me if you live in an apartment or in a house in town and then have to give your pet away later on. I’m actually a real sweet dog but I do have to have a lot of exercise and Ernie and I play really hard. He’s the bear and I’m the hound and we have a great time together running through the woods. This helps me to sleep better at night and not feel the need to chew things up. I’m not telling you to not not have a Plott hound for a pet, just be sure you know what you’re getting into. Tonight, David came home late from work and I’m still not speaking to him for doing this to me. You have to realize that we’re a very demanding dog and you have to really want us for a pet and be willing to work hard. I think Mr. Junior said it best one day: “If you don’t have as much grit as your dogs then you don’t deserve to have them.” Don’t be offended, but that’s what we expect of you.

Hi Nannie! my name is Porter, and I would HATE living in an apartment too! I don’t think the neighbors would like it when I talk (which I like to do a lot). Mom and Dad made an outside pen for when they go into town to work-but I have a nice view of the chickens and turkeys. Mom got really mad yesterday when I broke my lead and went after the peacock-he’s so mean though! But he flew up on the barn, so I stood there and barked till mom came and got me. Chewing is fun too! I’m 18 months old, and just today I chewed up one of Mom’s hair clips-you should try them-nice hard plastic. Someday I wanna meet another Plott hound like me. Till then I enjoy Mom reading your blog to me!
Hello Porter! It’s always nice to hear from another Plott. I talk to Bob Plott some but I don’t think he understands the joy of chewing and chasing like you and I do. Did you know that you have a famous name in Plott hound history? Porter was Amos Plott’s dog and Porter Die gap over in Maggie Valley was named for him after Porter was killed by a bear. And yes, I like nice hard plastic too. I also like just about anything that can be chewed. You should come visit sometime and see the exhibit. David can come get me and we can play together.
I didn’t know my name was famous! I came from a kill shelter in Wythville, a lady picked up me and my brother and two sisters when we were 3 months old and brought us to the heritage humane society in Williamsburg, VA. They named us Porter, Cash, Dolly, and Loretta ’cause we seemed like country dogs. Mom and Dad liked the name, so I kept it. Maybe we’ll go on a camping trip in North Carolina so I can see where my kin came from! Hiking and camping is really fun-I always find lots of good sticks to chew on. Mom put some of my puppy pictures on the facebook plott group if you wanna see what I looked like when I was little. Thanks for writing back!
Be sure and let us know when you get out here and I’ll take you coon hunting with me.
Hey, Nannie. Jessie here. I’m a basset, daschund, weimariner mix. I love to hunt. I spend time with my nose to the ground. It’s fun reading your blogs. My mom said I will have a blog soon, but right now I’m too young to really concentrate on what I want to say. I have destroyed some stuff, too, but my mom keeps me in bones and chew toys so I haven’t ruined anything really valuable. I will keep reading your posts. Take care, and I’m looking forward to meeting you. Maybe we can track something together.
Hey Jessie. You come from some good hunting stock. There’s a story that two of the five dogs that came to Philadelphia with Johannes Plott were Weimaraners. If that’s true, you and I might be related distantly. I hope to get to see you and do some hunting with you. I’ll bet you would like coon hunting!
Hi Nannie,
We just adopted a Plott Hound, Clover, from our local SPCA. She’s at least 10 years old and she’s a sweet dog and a wonderful pet. I’ve been told by someone who knows hounds, that Clover seems to have been well-trained to hunt. She’s not distracted by other animals, including our cats.
We are teaching Clover how to be a spoiled pet, rather than a working dog. We walk her four or five times a day and give her a lot of attention. We are able to leave her alone for a few hours and she’s fine, sleeping on her soft new dog bed. She would probably be okay for more than a few hours, but, fortunately, we don’t need to leave her that long.
I’m glad I found Clover – and I’m glad I found your blog.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Hi Clover’s Mom,
I’m glad you found my blog too. I’m glad that you found Clover and I know that Clover is glad. A lot of hounds get lost so it’s good that you’re spoiling Clover. I have a nice soft bed too and since I’m a hound, I spend a lot of time sleeping even though I’m only 6 months old. I hope you’ll keep up with my blog as next week I’ll show what Thanksgiving was like around here with my cousin and nephew. Have fun with Clover as I think Plott hounds are really good at having fun!
Nannie
That is so something I could see my dad saying.
Much Love !!
Valerie Meyer
Thank You Miss Valerie (I guess I should call you Mrs. Valerie). David talks about Mr. Junior a lot so I get to hear a lot of stories about him. I hope he’ll take me coon hunting sometime.
Nannie,
I know how you feel. I chewed up Mr. Andre’s mothers dentures. That cost him over $3000 which they tell me is a lot of chew toys. But Mr. Andre still loves me, works with me and trains me, and I know that I am loved and a fine dog. However, I think you thoughts are correct you need a special owener to get us. We are deathly loyal and want to please but we do demand the same.
best regards,
Behr von Linde
You’re lucky to have someone that knows what a special dog you are. You should come to the museum and see the exhibit we have on Plott hounds. Did you know that the Plott hound is the state dog of North Carolina? Send me a picture of you sometime!
Nannie, you’re really pretty, and you should be since you look just like me! I was listed at the pound as a Plott hound/lab mix, and my mommy and daddy had NO idea what they were getting into. They thought they could just walk me a few times a week, and it would be okay.
Nope, I have to be walked a long time every day, and I get hikes in the country off leash, and I go to doggy day care where I can play really hard all day. If I don’t get these things, I eat the couch, or shoes, or Mommy’s ring, or the cat toys, or the window sill. I eat them all when I’m bored!
I taught them.
Love,
Misha
Hi there Misha. Thanks for visiting my blog. Yes, we do have to teach our parents how to take care of us since we don’t care too much about lying around on the couch. Now eating the couch– that’s more like it. I have been getting a lot of playtime with my nephew Leroy who is a young Australian Cattle Dog. He and Ernie and I play hard all day and then I sleep good at night. We’re having a lot of fun playing in the snow. Have a fun day… Nannie
i was fortunate enough to adopt 2 plotts brother and sister..haley and buddy……….we love long runs at the beach we chase sea gulls and roll in dead horseshoe crabs..when we were first adopted we chewed 2 sofas a box spring several pairs of shoes and the stick to our moms bmw.she loves us just the same.we have a brother…hes a cat, were afraid of him but we put up with each other anyway.we were rescued from tenn and live on long island in ny now..its not as bad as you all may think..every day we go for long beach runs…romps at the park…we jump waves at the ocean all year.we looking for some bears but the best we can find are some racoons squirrels …some small dogs…people are afraid of us cause most of the dogs here are small with ribbons…….with love buddy and haley
Hey there Ms. Barbara, Buddy and Haley! It’s nice to talk to Plotts and their owners all over the country. Chewing is something we Plotts really love to do and can do it well. We have so many bones and chewy toys all over the house and I can find something else to chew. But you know, I still love to get one of Jeannette’s or David’s shoes and chew on them cuz they just smell so good. Hope you enjoy your runs on the beach and the horshoe crabs sound awesome! (I can almost smell them now) Our good friend, Mr. Bob Plott has a wonderful book about the history of the Plott hound called “Strike and Stay.” I think Ms. Barbara would enjoy reading and she can tell you about your relatives which still live in western North Carolina. Stay in touch… Nannie
Hi to all of you! My name is LaRue and I have been told I am almost a “full” plott hound. My friends at my no-kill shelter in Tomball, Texas have been nothing but good to me for two long years now. Sadly though, Many Texans don’t know about my breed, nor do they know how wonderful a pet I am. I mean i can climb fences, I think that is pretty darn cool, but the humans don’t seem to want me to do this. I sure wish I could find a forever home, and this is why I am typing (with my one big long claw) to you today. Do any of you have ANY helpful information you can send my human friend who owns this computer I’m on? Two years is long enough, but I am well loved and well cared for. You can take a look at me on the AAR website or at the link below. I have even had people say they would buy my plane ticket to another state if the right human or family stepped forth. Take a look at me will you…how can you resist? Thanks everyone, your pal in Texas, “LaRue”

Hi there Snoopy’s Mom! Thanks for caring about and for your Plott hound. When we are used as hunting dogs the dogs come and the dogs go. This has been how we’ve spent generations so it’s probably not going to bother Snoopy too much. Most dogs do better having another dog around so you might want to think about getting another dog.
Some hound types eat really fast because they are nervous about the other dogs getting their food. You might want to give Snoopy less food at a time. Also Snoopy may eat more slowly when there’s not another dog around. The best thing to do is talk to your vet about this.
Ernie and I are going to see Dr. Tami tomorrow!
Thanks for visiting the blog,
Nannie
Hi there, that’s a beautiful picture of Nannie posted. Reading about hounds and the different types of breeds from other commenters make me envious because where I come from there aren’t many available. Plus, they usually cost an arm and an leg. Thanks for the post, it’s always great to read about different kinds of dogs.
You’re lucky to have someone that knows what a special dog you are:)
Yep. These are some chewy pups. It’s a bit time-consuming to teach, but Dr. Ian Dunbar has some great advice about how to get your pup hooked on chew toys. Can’t remember the name of his puppy book, but it’s out there somewhere. You definitely need the industrial-strength Kongs for these guys!
I once had a dog like you before and I can really testify how energetic you folks are. I had lost a pair of shoes and a slippers once. After that, I decided to buy a lot of chew toys for her. Demanding yet fun to be with. That is what I can say to those who wanted a Plott Hounds as a pet.
